Party Animal

Even in the midst of all the other “stuff” that’s going on in our household, we strive to keep life as normal as possible for the other 2 kids.  Last night, OnlySon was able to attend his first school party.  Much to the dismay of OtherHalf, he is now old enough to attend the dance/party that OnlySon’s school has at least once a month.  It’s frenzied, albeit chaperoned – fun.  Both of the older kids went, and loved it, so it was now OnlySon’s turn.

OnlySon was not jazzed when the subject of “dancing” first came up, as he’s still of the mind that girls are not the opposite sex, they’re a whole other species, and much to be avoided.

However, once I told him that there were other things to do – basketball, swimming, foosball, junk food – he was more on board.  And I think some of the kids at school talked up the party, so he was tentatively excited when the time came around.

OtherHalf …………..was almost nauseous.  He insisted on taking OnlySon to the school, to see him off – and, I’m sure give him a list of instructions half a mile long on what not to do.  I let them go, promising OnlySon that I would be there at the appointed time to pick him up, and arranging a place to meet, so he didn’t have to search for me in the dark.  And off the boys went, one to party, one to grieve.

When OtherHalf returned home?  He was almost sick to his stomach with the knowledge that his “precious boy” had crossed another line that we couldn’t uncross.  This was proof positive that our son is growing up.  Partying with the big dogs, well with the junior high dogs, at any rate, meant that he is now old enough to attend school functions without his parents present!  Ack.  Horror!

Chuckling to myself, I told OtherHalf that it would be alright, no one would harm our little boy at a school dance – didn’t the girls come home alright?  Yeah, so there.

And OnlySon?  Well…..

School parties now officially ROCK.

Party on, dudes!

  1. Good for him! I remember well dreading going to those dances and then POOF! one day….girls started looking a WHOLE LOT better and I couldn’t wait to get away from the parents for a few hours!

    • LOL, my husband can barely handle him going to school functions without him, let’s not write GIRLS in the mix yet! He’d have an anuerysm.

  2. 😀 Men and dancing… Now that school parties officially rock, I can only say: Good Luck with what comes next 😉

    • Nope, there is no next, at least not till his Junior year in high school, when I can handle it better… *hiding face in hands*

  3. I’m kind of glad my kinds aren’t into the dances. They are home bodies who still find girls a waste of their time. I shutter to think what will happen when they finally decide girls are worth spending time with. I don’t think I’m ready for that!

    • It’ll start slow, with covert phone calls, and trips to “the library – to study, Mom”. Or, maybe, just “hanging out at the park, really!” *snicker*
